Transition Culture has moved

I no longer blog on this site. You can now find me, my general blogs, and the work I am doing researching my forthcoming book on imagination, on my new blog.

Make Sure Your Projects Get a Mention in ‘In Transition’

intransition2As by now you are no doubt excitedly telling everyone you come into contact with, the postman, work colleagues, neighbours, complete strangers and anyone else who will listen, the Transition film ‘In Transition’ has its online premiere on Saturday May 23rd at 1.45pm (GMT).  This week we are putting the finishing touches to it.  We are keen that the film expresses, as clearly as possible, the breadth and depth of the Transition movement.  We therefore need to know about any projects you are doing in your initiatives so that they can get a mention…

So, if you have active projects in any of the following categories, we need to know the name of your Transition iniative, the name of the project, and the date it started.  That’s it.  No great project outlines or photos, just the name, in order to give a sense of what is happening.  The category headings are;

  • Food
  • Money
  • Education
  • Energy
  • Building
  • Transport
  • Engaging Local Government

See you name in lights!  Smell the greasepaint!  Lights, camera, action!  Of course, whether or not you will be able to handle the fame is another question, but for now, please post your projects in the Comments box below, and please do so before Wednesday morning!  Many thanks.

Located on 437 acres of bio-dynamic farmland on the banks of French Creek in Chester County, the Kimberton Waldorf School has created an appealing environment for its students – a campus surrounded by fields, meadows, streams and woods. And across the street — a farm, a dairy, Seven Stars Yogurt production and Community Supported Agriculture garden.
But the work done by more than 100 volunteers on April 18 will not only enhance the campus, it will create new riparian habitat and protect a first order tributary to French Creek.
Through the assistance of the TreeVitalize program and Chester County Conservation District, volunteers were able to plant 348 native trees and shrubs, which will form a riparian buffer along the tributary. The school hopes to become a model of stewardship and community building for green schools, and the greater community.

We have started a fruit, nut, berry guerilla treeplanting movement in stockholm city! We want to plant the seed that inpires people to plant their own trees outside the balcony, at public places and everywere there is space. A massive movement. The ulimate goal is free, local fruit for the Stockholmers and visitors. What a gift we are going to share with each other! What a transitionculture! Also we hope to intense the debate about the space in the city and how it comes its built for cars that chase our kids and poision our lungs . We call the movement “tillväxt” it means growth and we taking the term back to show the only possible eternal growt, the anual growth of plants. The page are under constuction but check it out http://www.tillvaxt.org.

Transition Langport
Food – Transition Langport is starting a local food co-op, mapping locally produced food as well as looking at setting up a community fruit and nut grove and food growing and cooking activities.

Money – In the 18th Century Walter Bagshot established the Langport Bank of Stuckey & Co. connecting Langport to London’s financial centre. Langport had had its own mint since Saxon times. However the bank has since been absorbed by the Nat West Bank and Transition Langport hope to revive the tradition of a local economy by creating a local currency based on the original Stuckey bank note.

Education – Transition Langport have shown a variety of inspirational films and talks such as Power of the Community and Organic Gardening – the Natural No Dig Way by Charles Dowding. We also had our Great Unleashing where Michael Eavis came to open the event and most of the community of all ages and backgrounds came to learn and be inspired by; solar powered boats on the River Parrett, horse drawn local food cart, natural soap making, seed and plant swap, plastic free bags, bio methane powered cars, bicycle workshop, local food BBQ, cycle powered smoothies, local rubbish sculpture, solar powered cinema, physic gardening, herbal remedies, free cycle, energy efficiency and renewables – all from the local area and surrounding communities.

Energy – Transition Langport are engaging with Somerset County Council to see if they can install an anaerobic digester to provide bio methane to power the local community using farm waste. We are also starting to look at how we can all improve the energy efficiency of our homes and buildings so we reduce our energy demands.

Building – Transition Langport members had already started an affordable, low impact housing project and are looking for funding to build eco dwellings for people in the local area. http://www.futureroots.org.uk

Transport – Once upon a time Langport had two train stations and now they have none! We are beginning to look into the feasibility of reinstating a train station to connect to the main Taunton to London line. We are also encouraging lift share and cycling.

Engaging Local Government – Cara (founding member of Transition Langport) became a Town Councillor for Langport and the Town Council are very supportive of Transition Langport. Cara is also working with Transition Somerset (representatives of the local Transition Towns) who are engaging with Somerset County Council on their Somerset County Transition Motion.
