A taste of the forthcoming ‘The Transition Companion’

Things are moving along well with ‘The Transition Companion: making your community more resilient in uncertain times’ which is due to be published in early October.  We are currently doing the fine editing and sorting out all the pictures.  As part of the run-up to the publishing, Green Books have produced what’s called a ‘blad’ (“Book Layout And Design”), which gives a taste of the layout, style and contents in a little 16 page booklet.  You can download it as a pdf here.  A free printed copy of the blad will be given to everyone who attends this weekend’s Transition Network conference in Liverpool.  We think it’s going to be gorgeous, and is in a quite different style from the previous Transition books.  You can keep up to speed with developments either here or over at Green Books’ website.  We are currently planning a few launch events for the book… if you have any ideas for one, do get in touch…

Looks great Rob. Will there be an eBook version as well as the dead tree version? Kindle maybe? (You don’t have to buy a Kindle to read the books – can download a free Kindle reader for your computer, iPad, even iPhone!)

Looking forward to seeing it – enjoying the Local Food book at the moment – keep them coming.

Great work. Very impressive. I would like the e-book version as well.

Looking great Rob, although I’m sad to see that that popular Margaret Mead quote has made it in:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Wonderful woman though Mead was, and much as I agree with the sentiment, the second part of that quote has always struck me as transparently false!

Nice work Rob – two books in the Green Books’ top 10 sellers list and one not yet even published!

Hi Shaun, how about this quote from Margaret Wheatley – it expresses the same sort of idea (but perhaps isn’t so quotable):

“Despite current ads and slogans, the world doesn’t change one person at a time. It changes as networks of relationships form among people who discover they share a common cause and vision of what’s possible.”

I love the Margaret Wheatley quote; it really encapsulates what I’ve long suspected! Many thanks.

I like the article and book; transition is a behavior that we need to become very familiar with. I like the e-book idea also and would pay. I have tweeted your info and have put it on my blog.
I don’t go along with the Mead quote in the context Shaun and Josiah have in relationship to the idea that the world changes or doesn’t change one person at a time. Either idea is a black or white one with no gray in between. I will say that in my perspective both ideas or views on the ‘world’ allows for a grayness as we are human beings and not robots. Even with in specific ideologies people can have varying degrees of truth and honesty. Sometimes I feel we as humans lack a certain sense of humility about our ‘place’ in the environment.
’nuff said for now.

Sorry about my mis-reading the blog. I was referring to the Mead and Wheatley quotes as they give different perspectives about the world in general. Sorry if there was any confusion.

[…] I had the wonderful chance to be in Rob Hopkins (founder of the Transition movement) workshop last weekend on the Transition Town Conference in Liverpool (resources from the harvesting team here & here) when he introduced for the first time the new “ingredient-cards” (photo from Rob’s blog) he created along with his coming book “The Transition Companion“.
