We had a wonderful morning yesterday planting walnut and almond trees supplied by the Agroforestry Research Trust on Vire Island in the middle of Totnes. The local press turned out, and the Mayor of Totnes, wearing the ceremonial chain planted a fine French walnut tree, posing with a pile of walnuts on the end of a shovel! The sun shone after days of rain, and various TTTers turned out to dig holes and share in the unique pleasure that one can only experience from planting trees with friends. Anthony Steen, MP for Totnes, has thrown his weight behind a new local currency scheme in the town. A limited number of **Totnes Pounds** are being put into local circulation to launch the **Transition Town Totnes (TTT) Economics and Livelihoods** group on Wednesday 7th March. Three hundred of the individually numbered ‘pounds’ will be given out at the event which features Molly Scott Cato, a lecturer and author speaking on **Local Money, Local Skills, Local Power…the role of money in building resilience.** Her talk will be followed by a panel discussion which will explore some of the issues raised.

One of the best presentations at last weekend’s **International Forum on Globalization** in London (of which more soon) was called “New Stirrings & Targets for Activism” and was by Steve Kretzmann, Executive Director of Oil Change International. He has very kindly given me permission to share it with you here…
“Times have changed dramatically and permanently. As we heard yesterday, the best science now tells us that we have only ten years left to peak global emissions if we’re going to stay below 2 degrees C. Ten years. Campaigners working on energy are at a moment where we face a fork in the road. Although the need for upstream campaigns has never been more pressing, the powerful levers for action are newly downstream related to public concern over energy security and global warming.
