I wouldn’t know the answer to that question, but I certainly feel more open to the possibility following an event organised recently by the Transition Town Totnes Heart and Soul group called **Poetry in Motion** (“an evening of words to move, inspire and uplift”) which featured Drew Dellinger, one of the most respected and admired performers in the field of deep ecology / awakening / planetary work, and local Totnes poet Matt Harvey, who recently also performed at the TTT first birthday party. The event was a huge success, and I had the huge frustration of already being committed to teaching my evening class in the room next door, and being able to hear the laughter and applause through the wall but needing to focus instead on teaching about varieties of walnut and forest garden design. I thought I would never be able to hear the event.. but it turns out I can….

Despite the fact that I eat, breathe and sleep music, and it is a huge part of my life, it rarely features here at Transition Culture. I assume that the reason people visit the site is to be a part of this evolving exploration of the head, heart and hands of energy descent, not to hear me waxing lyrical about various new music. Therefore, I haven’t told you about one of the greatest living bands, Radiohead, covering one of the greatest ever songs, Joy Division/New Order’s ‘Ceremony’, or about the excellent download-only SVC Records.

The other day in the Independent, a full page ad drew my attention to the latest book by Vernon Coleman, ‘Oil Apocalypse’ (note this is not a link). Vernon Coleman has previously produced countless books, mostly based on fear-mongering and reactionary politics, and now he has hopped onto the peak oil bandwagon. The way Coleman’s books work is simple; here is a problem, it is far bigger and worse than you thought, be afraid, this is whose fault it is. I once read (rather I once *started* to read) his book ‘England, Our England’, an appalling load of rubbish which tried to argue that everything bad that ever happened to anyone can be traced back to the European Union, and that poor, noble England has been enslaved by this evil monster. Another book, which I picked up mistaking it for William Blum’s rather good ‘Rogue State’, was Vernon’s ‘Rogue Nation’, which described itself thus, “America is responsible for worldwide economic and political chaos. This book contains everything you need to know – and must know – about America”. It was possibly the worst written book I have ever read.

It taxed many of the world’s finest minds, and questions were even raised in the house about the fairness of such fiendishly difficult quizzes, but the **Transition Culture** Richard Heinberg tickets competition was no match for **Gareth Simkins**, who correctly answered that Richard Heinberg’s monthly bulletin is called ‘Museletter’. He wins 2 tickets to see Richard give the Lady Eve Balfour Memorial Lecture on Thursday 22nd November at Central Westminster Hall, London at 6pm. For more information on this wonderful event click here. Well done Gareth (and everyone else who entered, disappointingly there were no wrong answers).

One of the first **Transition Cities**, following in the footsteps of those noble conurbations, Bristol and Nottingham, is (are?) Brighton and Hove. Despite, according to the latest Transition Network newsletter, being better known for hosting the 2007 World Beard and Moustache Championships, Brighton is now home to a rapidly growing Transition Initiative, as the excellent article below, from the Brighton Rocks magazine, explains.
