I know this might not be something that excites many of you out there, but **Transition Culture** just passed a major landmark which I would like to share with you. Since the site began last November, the traffic has steadily increased, but for the last couple of months it has bobbled around under the 1000 visitors a day level, rather like the price of petrol in the UK, which has stuck below the psychological £1 a litre level for the last few months, at 99.99 pence, only now to start breaking through. Yesterday, however,

You may remember the recent Meg Wheatley competition where you were asked to decide from a list of choices what Schumacher College was named after. One of the incorrect answers was a fictional German prog rock band called Schumacher, whose classic album was called ‘Luminous Pancake Terror’. Last weekend as Emma and I wandered around the Tate Gallery in St. Ives, looking at an incomprehensible exhibition by the artist John Hoyland, we found a painting that would without a doubt, have been the cover of that album. I had an excellent meeting last week with Dr Chris Johnstone and Dr. Stephen Rollnick, in Bristol, to look at how insights from addiction and in particular Motivational Interviewing can inform energy descent projects. As part of preparing for last night’s talk I gave for Totnes Greenpeace, I was reading about nuclear waste storage, and something struck me very forcibly. We are looking at a waste heap of highly radioactive waste in the world at this point, generated by the world’s 440 reactors, of around 150,000 tons. That’s 150,000 tons of waste that needs constant monitoring and cooling and a lot of hi tech supervision.

Next Tuesday I am doing a presentation for **Totnes Greenpeace** about Energy Descent Planning, and about why nuclear power is not a response to the energy crisis. The event is on the theme of “Nuclear Power is the solution to the UK’s energy shortfall according to Tony Blair … ACT NOW”, and will include a screening of the new DVD produced by Greenpeace UK called **”Decentralised Energy – what are we waiting for?”**, which is excellent, and which I will write about in more detail soon.
The talk is at the Methodist Hall, Totnes on June 27th at 7.30 pm. For more information contact Claire on 07742 531980 or rainbowclaire68@yahoo.ca, or check out www.greenpeaceactive.org.uk. Maybe see you there.
