Visioning is a core activity that will run through all the activities of your Transition initiative. It will be most obviously a key aspect of creating ENERGY DESCENT ACTION PLANS, itself an exercise in collective visioning, but will also underpin your initiative’s STRATEGIC THINKING.
An Unleashing is the culmination of your initiative’s AWARENESS RAISING work, offering the opportunity for CELEBRATING what it has already achieved, where it might go, as well as the culture of the place. As you start BUILDING STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS an Unleashing can be a powerful way of publicising those new connections.
You may well have already seen this, indeed 2.5 million people did before it was removed from YouTube due to copyright infringement, but I hadn’t seen it until this weekend, and it is fantastic and, I found, actually strangely moving. Now back on YouTube, “Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind)” is a parody of the Jay-Z and Alicia Keys song, a celebration of the Welsh town. Although it has been criticised for the fact that its producers don’t actually come from Newport, I thought it was hilarious, as a lover of warts’n’all musical celebrations of place, such as that for Branksome in Dorset (very silly).

Every community that organises an Unleashing produces a very different event, a unique reflection of place, culture and people. Last night’s Unleashing of Transition Town Tooting in London was no different. Following hot on the heels of last week’s extraordinary Trashcatchers’ Carnival, the event marked the arrival of Transition Town Tooting, and signalled a collective statement of intent for the future.
