On Wednesday 14th June I interviewed Meg Wheatley and asked her the 8 questions developed for the *Skilling Up for Powerdown* project. I also did a longer interview which focused more on Energy Descent Plans, which I’ll post as soon as I get it transcribed.
**Do you see Peak Oil as a crisis or an opportunity?**
I don’t see it as either. I see it as a lens, or mirror, that reflects what we really value in this culture. From that perspective
**Albert Bates**, still the presenter of the single most inspiring talk I ever attended (Findhorn 1995, GEN conference, for any speech nerds out there…), has written an excellent review of James Lovelock’s ‘Revenge of Gaia’. Having a background in permaculture, ecovillages and also in many years campaigning against nuclear power, he is in a unique position to deconstruct Lovelock’s thinking. His review is respectful where necessary, and shows a deep understanding of the subject matter. It is by far the best review of it I have so far read.
The thing that most touched me and which I most took away from my visit to Eden was the sense that anything is possible. Tim Smit had a vision, a vision of turning a clapped out and bleak old clay pit in one of the most depressed parts of the country into one of the most extraordinary places in the UK. He had no money, nothing much to speak of other than a vision and the passion with which to communicate it.
The Association for the Study of Peak Oil have just announced the preliminary line-up for this year’s ASPO5 conference in Pisa in July. Looks fantastic, if you can make it and you are interested in peak oil it really will be the place to be. Some great speakers, I am particularly looking forward to Robert Hirsch, Folke Gunther, Richard Heinberg and Jeremy Leggett (although I have to confess in my ignorance there are many speakers I’ve never heard of!). I’ve never been before, closest I’ve ever been to an ASPO conference is the little clips in the End of Suburbia. The full line up is as follows;
Part of the paper I am writing at the moment looks at the metaphor of addiction in relation to oil/energy dependency, which then leads on to what we can learn from innovative approaches to addiction that might prove to be useful tools for weaning communities off oil. As part of this, in one section I have used the World Health Organisation’s ICD-10 Criteria, which define what constitutes a dependency. I would really appreciate any feedback on this. What do you think?
