“Vote for Me – I’ll guarantee you less every year”. Not something you are likely to hear from your local politician. Even though some MPs, like Michael Meacher, talk about the reality of peak oil, they still cling to the concept of business as usual, not really taking on board the depth of its implications and the inevitable need for relocalisation and for economic contraction. At what stage will MPs start to acknowledge the inevitable fact that we have to start rethinking some very basic assumptions and start working out how to make relocalisation and contraction electable?

It seems despite all the talk of peak oil, that the UK’s downfall might actually end up coming about from peak gas. This last week has been quite extraordinary, with the beginnings of a real crisis for the UK energy sector, not that, unless you were reading the Guardian over the last week, you would actually have heard much about it.

FEASTA, the Foundation for the Economics of Sustainability, based in Dublin, have just issued a briefing paper called The Great Emissions Rights Give Away, which explores the question of what is the fairest form of emissions trading. The paper is deeply critical of the EU’s proposed carbon trading system and suggests a new more equitable and effective system. It is also critical of David Fleming’s TEQ’s approach as set out in his book ‘Energy and the Common Purpose’, for reasons which all rather go over my head. The two will be debating the subject in Dublin in mid-April, I’ll let you know more about that soon. The paper can be downloaded for free and is very readable and illuminating.

This is possibly the single most wonderful things you could do with oil barrels. How about converting them into the most efficient form of space heating imaginable? All for just a few quid? In such a way as to heat the house as well as a beautiful heated cob bench, bed, whatever? I am always drawn towards technology that is simple enought that I can build it, look after it and explain it. The Rocket Stove is potentially one of the greatest inventions of recent years, and one you really should know about. Why there aren’t research facilities full of engineers running around with barrels and cob and making fires to test their amazing new creations is beyond me….

Over this week I will be taking a look at five things we could do with oil barrels when we are no longer able to put oil in them. The idea came from the cover of Peter Tertzakian’s new book A Thousand Barrels a Second : The Coming Oil Break Point and the Challenges Facing an Energy Dependent World (you can hear an interview with the author here) which I just started reading, which has a great picture which shows a huge collection of such barrels. Struck me that we’re going to have an awful lot of them left lying about the place, and perhaps they might become rather useful things.
