Some Thoughts on the First Evening of the 2010 Transition Network conference…

Here are a few brief reflections on the opening evening of the Transition Network conference.  When we found out that we couldn’t run the conference in Forest Row and had to find a new venue from scratch with about 6 weeks notice, in finding Seale Hayne Agricultural College, we found a gem.  Like a smaller and more homely version of the Royal Agricultural College which hosted the conference 2 years ago, the buildings are beautiful, and, as people arrive, they instantly seem to feel at home.  The College sits high on a hill looking out over the rolling Devon countryside with its many sheep, the town of Newton Abbot sits at some distance over the fields.

Conference Time… it’s Off to Seale Hayne…

The conference guides/Pattern Language booklets just back from the printers....

The Transition Network office is a blur of activity this morning as the last-minute preparations are put in place for our wholesale temporary relocation to Seale Hayne Agricultural College for the 2010 Transition Network conference this weekend.  There are banners, posters, Post-It notes, pens, petty cash tins, sticky tape, books, DVDs, and the printed copies of the conference booklet I posted here in its electronic format last week just arrived from the printers.  Here are some stats about the event… there will be around 275 full participants, plus 35 day ticket holders, 3 keynote listeners, 5 professional media people and 5 freelance filmers/podcasters. Although we are unable to provide live World Cup-style coverage of the whole thing, here’s some information about where you’ll be able to keep up with the event over the weekend and beyond.

Transition Network Conference 2010 Booklet Now Available

confbookletcoverHere’s what I’ve been doing for the last 2 weeks!  Everyone who comes to the 2010 Transition Network conference (starting in 8 days) will be given a 108 page booklet containing the programme of events, the complete guide to all the workshops, and the working draft of the ‘seeing Transition as a pattern language’ work I have been doing, and around which the conference, and the second edition of ‘The Transition Handbook’, is based (of which more in coming weeks).  You can download the booklet in two parts, the main document here (it is a big file, 8.64MB) and the cover here.  For those of you who are coming, here is an opportunity in advance to familiarise yourself with it.  For those of you not coming, here’s what you’re missing, there is still time to book.  If you find any typos, I don’t want to know, it has gone to the printers!

Our home for the conference, the former Seale-Hayne Agricultural College near Newton Abbott. A stunning venue, and we have it all to ourselves!

Forget Wimbledon, Glastonbury, or the Edinburgh Festival, the unmissable event of the summer of 2010 is the Transition Network conference at Seale Hayne, near Newton Abbott in Devon.  If the word conference usually makes your blood run cold, with visions of soggy sandwiches, death-by-Powerpoint and graphs and struggling to keep your eyes open after lunch, Transition Network conferences are an entirely different kettle of fish.  Think Open Space, a dazzling array of workshops, plenty of time to meet other Transitioners and learn from their experience, practical activities, great food, sunshine, time for games and for hanging out in the evenings, laughter, self-organisation, a deep immersive experience in this extraordinary thing we are all creating called Transition.  You will find more info here, and all the info you need in order to book.  This event will also introduce a new way of presenting the Transition model, based around the concept of a ‘Pattern Language’ which will be the centrepiece of ‘The Transition Handbook 2’, be a part of reshaping how we communicate Transition.
