I’m sure I am not alone in having a pile of books by the bed that I am somehow all reading at once, dipping in and out of them, and occasionally reading something all the way through. Although not really the most satisfying way of reading books, it is, at the moment, just the way it is, but it does have the advantage of meaning that I am getting the flavour of a few different books, and thought I might take this opportunity to tell you about the 5 best ones that I wake up to in the morning. Most of them are recently published, and given that, with everything else going on at the moment, I seem to have little time for writing book reviews, you can consider these as very brief reviews.

This weekend I was married, and very lovely it was too. After the wettest June on record, the clouds parted over the 3 days of the wedding and ensuing celebrations, and then closed again this morning. It was altogether extremely magical; friends, music, sunshine, football and dancing, accompanied by local food and wine, and a stunning cake. We held it in a youth hostel near Totnes, which we got to by all going up the river on a boat (part of our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the whole thing), which made for a magical beginning, heading up the River Dart in the sunshine. Thanks so much to everyone who came and to everyone who sent kind words and blessings. Married life is very pleasant so far! I thought you might like to hear the last bit of the speech I did as the groom…

The Totnes Pound project is now launched, and is, by all accounts, doing rather well. 10,000 notes have been printed and will be sold into circulation, and rather nice they are too. They have all kinds of security features, UV light, heat sensitive ink and so on, and it will be seen if and how they become truly adopted as the currency of choice in the town. Apart from some financial help with the printing of the notes, the Totnes Pound initiative is unfunded, and entirely dependent on volunteer input. For people outside the town who would like to get their hands on some of these historic notes, we have put together a **Presentation Pack**, comprising a Totnes Pound note and a copy of the detailed information leaflet about the scheme, which we can offer for sale here at **Transition Culture**. Simply click the Totnes Pound link to the right or click here. The funds generated will be well used maximising the potential of the scheme. For an insight into the potential of such a scheme, you might enjoy this short film about Berkshares in the US. Get your hands on a piece of history!

At last night’s **Food and Farming in Transition** evening at Dartington Hall, of which I shall write more soon, Chris Skrebowski, editor of the Petroleum Review and author of the Megaprojects reports, gave a talk which used a powerpoint which he had to zip through quite fast. I promised that the presentation would be made available here, so here it is. I am also working on Jeremy Leggett’s, which is an enormous file and I am trying to reduce to a manageable size. Anyway here is Chris’s presentation, an opportunity for all you peak oil anoraks to update your presentations with the latest graphs!

The Totnes Pound continues to generate lots of press coverage in the UK and further afield. Last week The Daily Mirror, one of the UK’s tabloids, ran a piece on it. Resisting the temptation to indulge in silly titles or to take the mick, they infact treated it quite seriously. Any suggestions for possible tabloid titles for stories about the Totnes Pound? There was also a piece in the Buenos Aires Herald of all places. Plans are now being finalised for a second issue of notes, due to be released next week. I’ll keep you posted.
