Just days away from the second anniversary of the ‘Unleashing’ of Transition Town Totnes, the 100th ‘official’ Transition Initiative, Transition Fujino in Japan achieved its Transition Town status! Fujino is a town of around 10,000 people, which inhabits the ‘edge’ between Tokyo and rural Japan. By all accounts it is a kind of Japanese Totnes/Lewes… a progressive community which was home to the Japanese permaculture movement, and is also home to a Steiner School. It is also home to the team who are translating the Transition Primer into Japanese! A fitting place for it to start….

Transition Gathering Camp
19-21st September 2008, Sussex.
This first transition gathering will provide a space to meet transitioners from other places at an event that welcomes all the family. The timing of the gathering leads up to the autumn equinox which will mark the emergence of transition initiatives.

I was up in Nottingham a while ago giving a couple of talks to a very young but vigorously emergent Transition Nottingham group. The first talk was to an invited audience of business people and local councillors, and the second was a public talk with almost 200 people. There is some very good work going on there, a good deal of energy and momentum. On the Every Action Counts website, you can find this excellent update on what they are up to, which I have also copied below. We are planning a Transition Cities event for some time around the end of the year, which we hope will be in Nottingham. Watch this space.

Run of the Mill magazine is produced by the Ruskin Mill Educational Trust at Nailsworth, the beautiful venue that hosted the first Transition convergence in 2007. Their latest edition includes an interview with Mike Jones of Transition Stroud, which gives a rich overview of how Transition Stroud began and what it has been up to. Last week, Somerset County Council voted unanimously to endorse a motion that they become the UK’s first ‘Transition Local Authority’. What is means is that SCC could start taking an integrated approach to its planning processes, putting peak oil and climate change at the heart of its forward planning. It may well also unlock funds for the many Transition initiatives emerging across Somerset. The proposal put before the Council ran as follows;
