Misunderstanding Peak Oil.

teakoilI was in Teignmouth in Devon the other day enjoying this glorious summer we’re having, and passing by a shop window I saw the bottles you’ll see to your left. I had to take a picture of them, as they reminded me of a story I haven’t told you yet. When I was living in Ireland, I once had a conversation with an elderly man in a pub, which I was under the impression was about peak oil. I talked about my understanding of the concept and he interrupted occasionally with fairly innocuous interjections, and I thought the conversation was getting somewhere interesting. George Monbiot on Peak Oil and Transition Towns.

ms2At last week’s event in Lampeter writer and activist George Monbiot was asked to give a 5 minute reflection on the presentation I had just given. His response focused on the concerns he has with the concept of peak oil, and why he feels climate change to be the more important driver. Much of what he said about the dangers of synfuels and biofuels I very much agree with, but his optimism about peak oil isn’t, as regular readers will know, something I share. Pioneering Welsh town begins the transition to a life without oil – The Guardian. Saturday 7th April.

l2Great piece in the Guardian on Saturday about the Lampeter event. Came across very well, and hard to fault, other than the assertion that Totnes is in Cornwall! The article generated a lot of interest, and has also been picked up quite widely across the web. Here it is.

Transition Town Lewes Publishes Its Programme of Events.

lTransition Town Lewes is steaming ahead down on the south-east coast, and is nearing the end of its Awareness Raising stage. It has just published its Programme of Events for the next 4 months, modelled closely on Transition Town Totnes but taking the whole model off in its own, exciting, Lewesy kind of ways. Transition Town Totnes Launches Its New Programme of Events!

innerWe are delighted to confirm the next TTT programme of events that will take the initiative through until the summer.
