At the Transition Network conference, Richard Heinberg gave an online presentation looking at the concept of Emergency Planning for Communities, something he initially unveiled at Findhorn last year. You can see his presentation here. For a while now, Richard and I have been discussing the tension between longer term planning for resilience and the more immediate and pressing responses demanded by sudden and rapid change. It is still an ongoing discussion, but we thought now, with Richard’s presentation, it would be a good time to open up the conversation for your thoughts. What follows is the series of email exchanges we have had since late last year.

In Transition: from oil dependency to local resilience. A Film.
We are delighted to announce the near-launch of ‘In Transition’, the hour-long documentary about Transition. The film is the work of director Emma Goude, with production by Smith and Watson, and with input from Transition communities around the world (for the story of the film, click here. For those of you who felt the Age of Stupid only told one half of the story, here is the other half. It tells the story of the generation that looked peak oil and climate change square in the face, and responded with creativity, compassion and genius. We think you’re going to love it. MEMBERS of the Transition Town Forres (TTF) group were celebrating last week after being officially given the keys to land on Bogton Road for their community garden and allotment project.
The group have been trying to get their hands on the land for about a year, and seemed to have to cut through a seemingly endless amount of necessary red tape before Moray Council would agree to lease the land to them.

I travelled to London yesterday for an event which was part of the Big Energy Shift (BES). BES was commissioned and supported by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Northern Ireland Executive and the Welsh Assembly Government and was facilitated by Ipsos Mori. Over the last few months, members of 9 communities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have met for a series of facilitated “deliberative discussions”, looking at the bases on which the public would be prepared to take up renewable energy generation and energy conservation. Yesterday’s meeting was the last in the series, and brought representatives of all the communities involved to London. It was a fascinating day.

Here is an excellent update on the nut tree plantings taking place in Totnes, those of you doing similar things in your communities might find this useful…. my thanks to Wendy for documenting this.
Background:
TTT started a nut tree planting scheme in Totnes in March 2007, with the planting of a few varieties of nut trees on Vire island. The vision behind this scheme is to provide another source of nutritious food for the community in the future.
