First German Transition Network conference: November 19th-21st, Hannover

(Here is a message recieved from Gerd Wessling in Germany…) In partnership and parallel to the upcoming Transition conference in Scotland (more info to follow), the German Transition Network is very happy to announce the first ever Transition-conference in Hannover/Germany from November 19th – 21st!  It will be primarily a German-speaking conference; with some English-speaking elements too (e.g. when linking up to Scotland).  We will also work on the theme of broadening; but even more so see this conference as a wonderful way of all Transitioners (and those who want to become such!) in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux etc.  to connect, work together in defining what Transition is and will be in the German-speaking countries/culture & have a lot of fun together!  More information can be found here, or contact konferenz (at) transition-initiativen.de.

More Reflections on the Big Society: from the Development Trust Association conference.

I spent yesterday at the Development Trust Association (DTA) conference at the Derby Assembly Rooms.  A fascinating day, including an interesting look at Development Trusts globally, participating in a workshop about Low Carbon Communities, and meeting some fascinating people, as one always does at such events.  The highlight for me though, and something of interest given recent discussions here at Transition Culture, was a debate about the coalition government’s ‘Big Society’ agenda (see the end of this piece for an event Transition Network is running soon to explore its implications).

A Report from the Launch of the Totnes Renewable Energy Society

Last Friday, in Totnes Civic Hall, saw the historic launch of the Totnes Renewable Energy Society (TRESOC).  A key piece in the relocalisation of Totnes and district, TRESOC offers members of the community the chance to buy into their own renewable energy company.  The evening started with Cllr. Tony Whitty, the Mayor of Totnes, who put the work of TRESOC in the context of the town’s wider spirit of being a pioneering town, a spirit now embodied in its identity as a Transition Town.  He mentioned the 74 photovoltaic panels now adorning the Hall as part of the Transition Streets initiative, which will be formally ‘switched on’ at the Energy Fair next Saturday.  TRESOC, he told the nearly-full Civic Hall, is another key step towards enhancing the sustainability and resilience of Totnes.

‘Local Sustainable Homes’: Now Available!

The third book in the Transition Books series, ‘Local Sustainable Homes: how to make them happen in your community’ by Chris Bird, is now available to purchase here at Transition Culture.  I got my copy on Friday, and it is fantastic, packed with stories, case studies and ideas.  You can now order your copy here.  It is a brilliant guide to creating low impact homes in your community, packed with inspiring case studies of low-carbon buildings, from retrofitted old houses to new eco-villages.  Chris is launching the book this week in Stroud as part of their Open Eco-Homes event.  Transition initiatives can buy multiple copies of the book here.
